The toponymy of Selty

Udmurt name is Сьӧлта [S’ӧlta]: settlers of the village were members of the family group КильмезьСьӧлта [Kilmez’-S’ӧlta] (Kilmez’– hydronym).

There are other versions of the name origin also:

1) The area has meadows for horse pasture. Horses walked at night time, too, and for them to be together legs were bound with cords – сьӧлтэт [(udm.) s’ӧltet].

2) Many names are connected with local nature specifics. For instance, part of the village (nowadays Lenina Street) had Zhaigil name before. This village was located on Zhaigilka river (probably, the name origin comes from Udmurt words: жаг [zhag] + йыл [iyl] – cluttered hill). There were landfills formed from natural materials: branches, mud, bird feathers, etc. on Palvaika river streaming through the village (Udmurt words: пал [pal] + вай [vay] – unpaired amorphic tributary branch of the river).

3) Votka sovereigns Bursin and S’ӧlta lived at this location. Cheptsa sovereigns had battles with sovereigns of S’ӧltakar within the legends of the northern Udmurts. This detail probably shows that warriors of S’ӧlta clan were members of Kalmez clan and they were strangers in Cheptsa.

The first mention is in the census of 1710 as a part of Arsk road Kalmez-Selta. The first settlers appeared in 1596. It was the biggest settlement of those times, there were 56 households.

Selty village changed the name many times: S’ӧlta, Sel’ta or Kul’temstyany, Selta or Kozhil’-Selty, Kil’mez’-Selta village, Selty village, Selty town [Atamanov 2015: 703].
