The toponymy of Igra

Udmurt name is Эгра, Вужгурт [Egra, Vuzhgurt]. Egra – one of the ancient and big clans, a family group of the Cheptsa river basin. V.V. Napol’skikh established the fact that the clan name is connected with Ob Ugrians indirectly. The Perm name of Ob Ugrians in Komi language is йэгра [(komi) yegra], эгра [(udm.) egra], (→ Югра [(ancient rus.) Yugra]). The name was borrowed by Perm people from close contacts with Ob Ugrians, and the name was included in the Perm list of names. According to V.S. Churakov, the clan name is originated from Udmurt male name Эгыр [(udm.) Egyr], and the personal name is originated from эгыр [(udm.) egyr] ‘carbon’. Вужгурт [Vuzhgurt]: вуж [(udm.) vuzh] ʻoldʼ + гурт [(udm.) gurt] ʻa villageʼ: Old village of a clan.

It is one of the oldest settlements on the North of the Udmurt Republic. The first mention is in the list of inventory revision books of voivode Fedor A. Zvenigorodskiy, voivode Vasiliy T. Zhemchuzhnikov and psalm reader Mikhail Odintsov in 1615. According to the census book of 1678 the village Igra on the Loza river consists of 43 households, 185 people live there.

Two legends of the name origin are known. The first one is heard from old citizens. They say The Udmurts settled on north meadows one day. Wealthy man Bigra was one of them. He has a white bull, who went to drink water to a stream [the stream is close to the bus station nowadays]. The place was considered to be a saint place. All people relocated here, together with Bigra man. The Russians who came here, too, called the man Igra.

The second legend is fixed in the book “A Child of a Sick Century by Udmurt writer Kedra Mitrey. As old people say, there was not a settlement in the current place of the village. Igra village settled after the relocation of people from Kuzeylud village because of laying of the Siberian Road (Kuzeylud village was located in 1 verst [milestone] of the Road and in 2 verst [milestone] of the current village place). Kedra Mitrey’s  second great-grandfather – Madey – was a member of the Egra family group from Kuzeylud village.
